February Meeting

Gavel 1

Get a large group of landlords together in meeting room and ask, “How many of you enjoy going to court?”  Not a single hand will go up.  Going to court, whether for evictions or money judgements is very, very stressful and unpleasant for all parties involved.   No matter how much money is owed, how mean and nasty the renters are, how trashed the rental unit, landlords can still find themselves losing the court case.  The lost rent, and the money spent on repairs and cleaning often are overshadowed by the huge emotional stress.  And sometimes this can drag on for several months.

Our 7:00 P.M. program on Thursday, February 8, at the Longbranch, will unlock the secrets many good landlords share of ways to stay OUT of the courtroom.  Experienced realtor and landlord Sheryl Jahnel will walk us through “Top Ten Ways to Avoid Going to Court”.  Owning and managing single family homes, a duplex, and a condo throughout the Cedar Rapids area since 1995,  Sheryl has only had to go to court four times!  This will be a great program for anyone who owns or manages rental property.  Come at 6:00 for social; the buffet for our room will be ready after 6:30.  The meeting and program will begin at 7:00.

As always, it is necessary to give the Longbranch an accurate count for room setup and food.  Please respond by Sunday night using the link below.

Also, this Tuesday, February 6, is our annual Landlords of Iowa Day on the Hill at the State Capitol in Des Moines.  The following is from our Legislative Chair, Bob Mitchell:

“We will have a 9:00 A.M. ‘rally’ meeting at 1009 E. Grande Ave, room 304, to organize our message and answer any questions you may have.
Stay in Room 304 for a meet and greet with sponsoring legislators. Then disperse to lobby our respective local Representatives and Senators. It’s a good idea to let your Senator and House member know that you are coming to the Capitol. You might ask them what time would work best for a brief meeting with you.
Then a wrap up meeting at a downtown watering hole before people leave town.
If you want to carpool, give me a call at (319)329-0117. Bob Mitchell.
This ‘Day on the Hill’ gives Iowa Landlords a chance to visit face to face with lawmakers from their home districts on the legislator’s turf. The commitment that is demonstrated by a Landlord taking time to travel to the Capitol and visit face to face with their representative is unmatched in results.”
