HSB 577….CO detector bill‏

A second subcommittee meeting has been scheduled for HSB 577 this week.  Landlords of Iowa, Iowa Landlords Association, and the Iowa Realtors Association are the only groups registered against HSB 577.  The Fire Chiefs, the Fire Fighers, the Department of Public Safety, and other interest groups are signed up for the bill.

This second subcommittee is scheduled to consider some amendments which will try to answer some of the concerns that many of us raised about this bill.  One of the major ones would be to exempt rental property owners from liability if something malfunctioned with the CO detector.  If that amendment is adopted, would that cause you to change your registration on HSB 577?  You could either change to “undecided”  or “for.”

Even homeowners, if this law is passed, would be required to have a CO detector.  Obviously, the enforcement of CO detectors would not be strong for homeowners.  Rental property owners, where there are inspection programs, would have the most compliance.
