April is Fair Housing month. Bernie Walther, Investigator for the Cedar Rapids Civil Rights Commission, has asked to bring us a very interesting speaker. Assistant US Attorney Kathryn Hayden will present Sexual Harassment in Housing. This has been and is becoming a serious issue in our industry, and we certainly need to know how to avoid any accusations or behavior that could be misinterpreted. Bernie will also be available to cover other current issues, so bring your Fair Housing questions and concerns.
In addition, Mechelle Dhondt with East Central Region Mental Health and Disability Services, will address our group briefly to explain their mission to improve health, hope, and successful outcomes for adults in our region who have mental health, intellectual, and/or developmental disabilities, and how these issues may impact landlords.
Join us Thursday, April 11, 7:00 P.M. at the Longbranch. The buffet dinner for our room will be ready after 6:30. As always, the Longbranch needs an accurate count for food prep and room set-up. Please respond no later than Monday if you wish to attend. This won’t be a meeting to miss!
ATTENTION MARION LANDLORDS:
A Public Hearing is to be held April 18th in the Council Chambers of Marion City Hall. The major points of a proposed plan include going to a two year inspection from the current three year cycle, and fee changes.
Fee changes will include a Landlord License and housing registration much like what Cedar Rapids is doing, without the required training classes. According to Gary Hansen, Marion Building Official, one of the benefits will be that if a housing inspection passes the first time, the initial inspection fee will be waived and the only cost for the inspection will be the unit charges and registration fees.
Gary would be happy to answer any questions prior to the Public Hearing. His contact information:
