September Meeting

We landlords have all been launched into the 21st century, whether we like it or not.  As of this past spring, ALL court documents are to be filed online, and all paper has been eliminated from  Iowa Small Claims Courts.  Actually, once we get the hang of it, EFiling will be quick and easy, and of course will eliminate one trip down to the Courthouse.  Join us at noon on Thursday, September 11, at the Clarion for our program whch will walk us through the step by step process of setting up your online account, downloading and completing the proper forms, filing your FE&D, and how to add the other forms needed for your hearing.   Our program will start at noon, the lunch buffet will be open at 11;45.  Please email us if you are coming, as we need to give the Clarion an accurate count.  [email protected]

Have you marked your calendars for the 2014 Landlords of  Iowa Convention?  This year it is close by in Coralville, and will be two and a half days packed full of  great landlording information, delicious food, new products and services and fun times with other landlords from across the state.  As a member of landlords of Linn County, you are also a member of landlords of  Iowa and eligible for the discounted registration rate of only $89.00.  Check out the website with more information at

See you all Thursday!

  1. I found that learning the EDMS filing system was difficult and very time consuming. Questions Emailed to the help desk were answered timely and helped a lot. I also had to call the Clerks office several times to clarify some category selections and about notices. Make sure you don’t file something wrong because the judge may deny letting you back out of it. Uploading document exhibits (PDF only) wasn’t too bad. Pictures were accepted only in PDF which took considerable time to learn how to convert from JPEG and upload them. It appears that no video is possible. Such as a video of the house/apt at move in or move out. So you may want to take lots of quality well lit pictures

  2. The EDMS filing system is not intuitive. It takes some time to learn. However, because EDMS is still being rolled out across the state, it is a work-in-progress and subject to change/upgrades. Therefore, you may need to stay up-to-date with changes in the EDMS process over the next couple years.

My favorite software for preparing PDFs for EDMS is “Foxit PhantomPDF Business” ( It has tools to convert JPEG to PDF, redact protected information, and electronically sign documents, including small claims forms.
